David Grenfell Reg.QS, FNZIQS
Director
David co-founded Ortus in 2004 along with Neil Edwards. David has over 25 years international quantity surveying experience, where his strengths lie in his direct manner and self-drive.
David has a lifelong love of the outdoors, even working as a professional hunter in his teens, and will still ‘take to the hills’ when time permits. David has an appreciation for the arts and is a long-standing collector of contemporary NZ works. When not at Ortus, David is ‘living the dream’ in Days Bay with wife Becky and kids.
Rory Sommerville Reg.QS, BBSc
Director
Rory was part of the Ortus team up until 2007, before heading to the UK to widen his PQS experience on large infrastructure projects. Rory returned to Ortus in 2021 bringing a wealth of experience in PQS roles for large seismic upgrade projects in NZ across both the private and public sector. Rory brings a logical focused approach, always with an eye on a successful project outcome.
Rory loves spending time outdoors with his family, all sports with an egg-shaped ball, and getting out for a spot of deep-sea fishing with friends.
Neil Edwards Reg.QS, FNZIQS
Project Director
Neil formed Ortus with David Grenfell in 2004.
Neil has over 40 years’ experience in the construction industry. Providing quantity surveying services in all its forms, Neil is well respected in the field and sits on the boards of the NZIQS and LPMS.
Neil loves his cricket (watching, not playing). He and wife Jo enjoy gardening, travel, fine wine and good food.
Ryan Antrobus Reg.QS, BSc (Hons)
Principal
Moving to New Zealand from the UK, Ryan joined Ortus in 2013 before becoming a Principal in 2019. Ryan works across a variety of projects, applying his vast experience in FQS & PQS roles. His expertise includes feasibilities, budgeting/forecasting and risk management.
Outside of work, Ryan loves his sport and is a keen golfer (his wife Charlotte often feels like a golf widow).
Matthew Simpson BBSc
Senior Quantity Surveyor
Matthew joined Ortus in 2012. Self-motivated with a sound theoretical knowledge, Matthew brings practical construction experience to his work. He enjoys a challenge and has a keen eye for detail, ensuring projects are kept on budget and on programme.
Originally from sunny Nelson, Matthew enjoys playing and coaching softball and escaping on his motorbike (when it’s in working order) on the weekends.
Kieran Quayle Dip.QS
Senior Quantity Surveyor
Kieran has been a member of the Ortus team since 2006. Possessing practical experience and a meticulous eye, Kieran is passionate about delivering excellent service to clients. His expertise includes contract administration, insurance/replacement estimates and dispute resolution.
On weekends, Kieran spends time with his wife Rachel, works on personal construction projects and takes trips to the family bach. Recently Kieran volunteered as a manager of Scout Jamborees, coordinating event planning and implementation.
Todd Burns Dip.QS, Dip.CM, NZIQS (Affil)
Quantity Surveyor
Todd joined the Ortus team in June 2020. He has a variety of skills having worked for a young Queenstown based consultancy previously. This has given him a wide knowledge of high end residential and commercial quantity surveying.
His expertise includes measurement take offs and estimating.
Todd enjoys getting out on the weekends around the country, whether it's for mountain biking, heading to the slopes for skiing, relaxing with some fishing or exploring various corners of New Zealand hiking and camping.
Dion Quayle Dip.QS, Dip.CM
Quantity Surveyor
Dion joined the Ortus team in 2012. He enjoys project-based work, is self-motivated and has a sound theoretical knowledge, which is backed by practical experience in the construction industry.
Dion’s expertise includes estimating, project management and strengthening projects.
Dion enjoys all sports, travelling, socialising, concerts and new experiences.
Robynne Nunan
Office Manager
Often the first point of call for our clients, Robynne joined the Ortus team in 2001 as the office manager responsible for running the office, administration and finances. Robynne keeps the Ortus team grounded in what can be a dynamic environment.
Robynne enjoys cooking, reading, fine wine and travel but above all loves spending time with her husband Tim, the kids, grandkids and good friends (preferably at the bach in Kinloch).
